Results of the 7th Continental Chess Tournament
Mar de plata 2012 is the name given to the 7th Continental Chess Tournament which took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 12 to 21. The winner of this opportunity was the Peruvian International Grandmaster Julio Granda, who then secured a berth to the next Chess World Cup.
The 7th Absolute Continental Championship of America brought together 200 players from all over the world Americas in one place to dispute not only the continental title but 4 unique places to play the appreciated Chess World Cup to be held in the city of Tromso, Norway, in August 2013.
After the results of the last round (11) there was a tie with 8.5 points in the first place among the 5 grandmasters: Julio Granda (Peru), Alexander Shabalov (USA), Diego Flores (Argentina), Eric Hansen (Canada) and Gregory Kaidanov (USA). Of all, the Peruvian Julio Granda He won the contest for best system.
However, after the end of the 7th Continental Chess Tournament Mar de Plata 2012, an extra mini-tournament was held to compete for the four places for the Chess World Cup. This tournament was carried out under the modality of all against all. Games were limited to 15 minutes plus 10 seconds from the opening move. After 5 hours of dispute the results were as follows: Gregory Kaidanov with 3 points, Julio Granda with 2.5 points, Shabalov with 2 points, Hansen with 1.5 and the Argentine Flores, who was eliminated.
In this way the Grand Master Julio Granda, a 45-year-old Peruvian, turned out to be the big winner of the 7th Continental Chess Tournament and also achieved a quota for the next Chess World Cup.
